It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…

…everywhere you go. And we all know what that means! That’s right folks: the lights are up, the cobbled streets of Bath are cordoned off and filling up with mysterious little chalets full of hidden delights – it’s almost time for the Bath Christmas Market!

The market opens this Thursday 27th November, and runs for a total of eighteen days until Sunday 14th December, so you’ll have plenty of time to take it all in. This years market promises to be every bit as magical as years past, with many independent local retailers taking stalls to showcase the best of Bath, as well as the time-honoured assortment of stallholders from far and wide, who return each year to offer us their exotic delights.

Opening times will be as follows throughout the markets eighteen day run:
Monday to Wednesday – 10am to 7pm
Thursday – 10am to 8pm
Friday and Saturday – 10am to 9pm
Sunday – 10am to 6pm

My advice is to get out there bright and early as it’s always busier than you expect! That also leaves you plenty of time to have a leisurely lunch, mull over any potential purchases you’re not sure about, and even have a wander around the rest of the city sights before diving back into the fray.

And there’s so much to see! Every year the market gets a bit bigger, as you can see from the map below. Visit the Christmas Market website to take a closer look, download a copy of the map for your reference and study the index – it’s a great way to pick out the stalls you know you don’t want to miss. It’s all about strategic planning!

marketI myself will be making a beeline for:

Paper High (chalet no.3): notebooks, journals and photo albums in fairtrade and handmade paper, bound in a jewel-toned spectrum of sari fabrics and silks. Just the ticket for any fellow scribblers out there!

Dream Blue Trading Company (chalet no.23): fresh from the Grand Bazaar, an array of hand-painted ceramics, sumptuous textiles and even tasty Turkish Delight. Rekindling fond memories of Istanbul – that reminds me, I need a holiday…

Shobla Trading (chalet no.98): right outside the guest house, this shining selection of handmade silver jewellery is a daily temptation for me every year – they know me by name!

Snowdonia Cheese Company (chalet no. 94): if you ask me, you can’t have a Christmas hamper without at least one brightly coloured waxed truckle of cheese – whether you prefer a fiery mature cheddar with chilli, or a creamy Wensleydale with apricot, you’ll find something to tempt you – for me, it’s a taste of home…

Chou Chou Nuts Over You (chalet number A, J & I) no visit to the market would be complete without something tasty to munch on as you wander around – and it doesn’t get much more Christmassy than a bag of tasty caramelised roast nuts. Mouthwatering!
